Fun with the Stoeger Coach Gun

The Stoeger Coach Gun comes in several variations, so finding one for the right price can be a challenge, since it’s not always clear exactly which model is which when you’re shopping.

But they’re good guns, according to a Gun Tests magazine evaluation in the May 2008 issue.

Gun Tests said, “…Short barrels, light weight, decent workmanship, low price, and excellent function resulted in our liking the Coach Gun very much. We’d change the auto safety and cut the trigger pull weights, and maybe shorten the stock for home defense.”

In the test, a wood-and-blued Coach Gun listed for $369. But prices for similar guns on GunBroker.com show wide price variations.

The gun in Auction # 110855132, listed by a retail store in Kirksville, Missouri, didn’t list a “buy now” price for a wood-and-stainless 12 gauge, but the opening bid was $460.01. The auction had four days to run on Monday.

Another gun above $400 appeared in GunBroker.com listing, # 110778813. It had a “buy now” price of $429.95 for a no-reserve stainless-and-polymer Coach Gun, and an opening bid of $419.95. It was being offered for sale by Shooter’s Vault in Phoenix.

Gun Tests’s listed MSRP actually forecast probable selling prices for the wood-and-blued Coach Gun fairly accurately. In Auction # 110866016, a model 31400 had a no-reserve starting bid of $339.95, or within $30 of MSRP.

However, it was possible to get the Coach Gun for substantially less. Auction # 108902574 ended after 18 bids, with the gun selling for $280.
