  1. Now that I’ve caught my breath after reading that MSRP, I’ll try to put my bewilderment down in practical terms – but first: 7.62×39 AND .300 Blackout? Why? Seems duplicative. Moreover, 9mm? Is it just because 9mm ammo is available? Because if this is a “bugout” solution, it’s missing .22 caliber for small game.

Allow me to submit testimony on my own “Hydra-headed” kit: a 5.56 complete AR, that I added a folding stock and scope/laser combo to; a Bear Creek 7.62×39 upper; a CMMG .22lr chamber insert with 3 magazines; a spare lower receiver; and an ATI Alpha Maxx 410 Gauge upper.

3 uppers and an insert, giving me .22 – .410 calibers; rimfire, smallbore (.223) and midbore (.30) centerfire, and shotgun, and a spare lower to boot. QD Pic Rail scope to switch between uppers, miscellany (bipod, sling, pop-up sights, extra mags, etc.) Total out of pocket for the works: $1,417.69. That’s an (arguably) more versatile combination than the above, leaving me $2,000 to spend on the case (!) And if you MUST have 9mm, add another $320 for a PSA 9mm upper designed for an AR-15 lower – and you are still near $2,000 in savings.

I applaud the notion of a do-everything combo, and since the AR platform is America’s LEGO gun, it’s only reasonable to take advantage of its versatile configurability in this way, showing a major reason why it is as popular as it has become – for example, invest in one premium trigger and it applies across all calibers and configurations.

But you certainly don’t have to spend high-altitude dollars to do so – and I felt that a little perspective in that regard might be helpful to readers considering such a step.
