Any resident who is at least 21 years of age may apply for a License to Carry in Texas. However, Texas law no longer requires people to have a license to carry a handgun. Having a License to Carry (LTC) allows holders to carry firearms in states where Texas has a reciprocity agreement.

 Is there a firearms training requirement in Texas for a License to Carry (LTC)?

Yes. Texas requires an applicant to attend a four- to six-hour firearms-training course before applying for License to Carry (LTC) permit.

 What are the requirements to obtain a handgun permit in Texas?

Applicants for a Texas License to Carry (LTC) must:

  • Be at least 21 years old, or 18 years old and in the military
  • Meet federal qualifications to purchase a handgun
  • Complete a handgun-competency course

 What are the steps to obtain a License to Carry (LTC) in Texas?

  1. Submit an online application at texas.gov. You will need a valid driver license or identification card, your current address, contact and employment information, residential and employment information for the last five years (new users only), information regarding any psychiatric, drug, alcohol or criminal history and a valid email address
  2. Schedule an appointment for fingerprinting. All fingerprints must be submitted through L-1 Enrollment Services. There is a fee of $9.95 for fingerprinting.
  3. Complete the classroom training. Pass the written exam, and a shooting-proficiency demonstration.
  4. Submit the certificate of training to the Department of Public Safety (DPS) to complete the application. You will be notified by mail if your application has been approved.

 How much does a Texas License to Carry (LTC) cost?

The fee for a Texas License To Carry (LTC) is $40.

 Does Texas recognize pistol permits from other states?

Yes. Texas has reciprocity agreements with some other states. Texas allows permitless carry for any person 21 years of age, who can legally possess a firearm, to carry a concealed firearm without a license or permit.
