SPRINGFIELD, Mass. – Smith & Wesson shooter David Olhasso earned two division titles during the Smith & Wesson Steel Shoot Series Match held over the weekend at the Fredericksburg Rod and Gun Club in Fredericksburg, Virginia.
Olhasso scored top finishes in the Stock Service Pistol (SSP) Production Division and the Iron Sight Revolver Division. Also competing in the third regional event of the season for Smith & Wesson was Gilbert Perez. Perez, who finished in a close second place behind Olhasso in the SSP Production Division, also placed third overall in the Iron Sight Limited Division.
“At every location, the Steel Shoot Series is always a challenge,” said Olhasso. “Even though the courses of fire remain the same between the regional matches, the different weather conditions plus the tough competition add to the challenge. In Fredericksburg, we faced rain early in the week with intense heat during the last days of competition. Fortunately, I was able to remain focused and concentrate on what needed to be done.”
Competing in the SSP Production Division, Olhasso won five of the eight stages using his M&P9 Pro Series pistol. His total time of 117.89 was 10.5 seconds faster than fellow teammate Gilbert Perez. Perez, who competed with an M&P9 pistol, scored top finishes in three stages of fire with Olhasso taking second place. In the Iron Sight Revolver Division, Olhasso earned another top place finish by winning all eight stages with a Smith & Wesson Model 327TRR8 revolver. Perez returned to the winner’s circle for a second time during the match, finishing third in the Iron Sight Limited Division, again with the M&P9 pistol.
“This was my first competition using the scandium frame Model 327 and I was very impressed with how the gun performed,” continued Olhasso. “The revolver was very light and quick out of the holster. As a result, I was able to transition between targets quickly and the balance of the gun felt very comfortable.”
Governed by the Steel Challenge Shooting Association (SCSA), the sport of Steel Speed Shooting uses steel targets, usually in a five-target array, and an electronic timer to record a competitor’s time for each stage of fire. The Steel Shoot Regional Series, sponsored by Smith & Wesson has one remaining match, the Northwest Regional hosted by the Albany Rifle & Pistol Club scheduled for September 26-28, 2008.
