(GunReports.com) — One of the featured auctions at GunAuction.com this week is a scarce and collectible pre-war Smith & Wesson revolver listed by “jackthedog.” Auction #11136938 is for a “.44 Hand Ejector, 2nd Model Target,” a .44 Special built on S&W’s big N-Frame with five screws. This no-reserve Penny Auction is generating a lot of interest, accumulating 36 bids in about 48 hours, with the high bid being $1,806 at one point.
The Standard Catalog of Smith & Wesson indicates that this scarce Target Model brings two to three times standard value, and Smith collectors expect a .44 HE in this kind of shape to attract attention. The gun’s overall condition is excellent, with the revolver retaining 98-99% of a factory refinish, “jackthedog” says in the seller’s description. The serial numbers are matching on frame, cylinder, ejector star, and barrel. The grips, which are of the correct type for the gun and in excellent condition, are unnumbered.
The patent-marked hammer has been modified to the wide-spur “double-cockeyed” style popular with target shooters of the era. The mechanics are in excellent shape with good timing and lock-up. The bore and chambers are in excellent condition. The revolver features factory-installed adjustable target sights on top of a 6 1/2-inch barrel.
