While Nebraska for years has maintained a statewide registry of Nebraskans with mental illness who are ineligible under federal law to buy guns, it has never shared that information with the federal background check system tapped nationally when people purchase firearms. In the aftermath of the shooting of an Arizona congresswoman by a man who apparently has a history of mental illness, that’s a potentially dangerous legal loophole that should concern Nebraskans, gun control advocates say.
