Florida agency says concealed weapons sales up

NAPLES, Fla. — Attribute it to the economy, the political landscape or a combination of both. While Floridians are scaling back their wish lists in response to present uncertainty, they’re not skimping on one product: Floridians are buying more guns.

In fact, a surge in concealed weapons applications has prompted state officials to ask for more money to timely process the requests.

Officials at the Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services said last week they can’t keep up with the 25,000 to 30,000 applications for new and renewed weapons permits they are receiving every month. Florida law requires state officials to accept or reject a concealed weapon application within 90 days.

At minimum, that’s a 25 percent increase compared to 2007, when the agency handled about 15,000 to 20,000 applications per month. At the other extreme, the figures represent a doubling of applications year to year.
